AbeAskNona is named after my mother, Margarita. She was the matriarch. Strong, hardworking, and she knew everything. She did it all: cleaned houses, ran a bakery, kept a little farm. She barely slept. Somehow she was up at four every morning, taking care of everyone. When you were stuck, you called her. She always knew what to do, and she loved being asked. To more than a dozen grandkids, she's just Nona.
Alzheimer's took her mind. Her body is still here, but she isn't, not really. And the thing I keep coming back to is this: everything she knew shouldn't just disappear with her. Knowing like that should get passed on. It should reach the next person who's stuck with no one to call.
